While in Nairobi last week, I spent a day visiting a girls’ rape rescue center. The facility accepts girls up to the age of 18. In total, I spoke to 25 girls. Four had infant children.

I shared my story of being a refugee, an immigrant and how that experience influenced my life. I shared my belief that it is the stories we create about our experiences that direct the trajectory of our lives. Owning our personal narratives gives us power.

I dressed like a butterfly for them and shared with them the butterfly’s journey from a struggling caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly and shared with them my belief that we are all on a journey of transformation. The experience was beautiful.

After my talk, I shared a meal with the girls and then we spent the afternoon dancing. Several took turns teaching me the steps though.

I left after sharing a meal and dancing with them. This experience was one of the highlights of my trip in Kenya.
